Children, especially young girls, often begin to sense expectations about who they should be and how they should behave far earlier than we realize. Sometimes those expectations are subtle—spoken through comparison, comments, or well-meaning guidance. Other times, they are loud and confusing. During this time, many girls wonder if who they are is enough.
As a writer, a nurse, and a person of faith, I’ve always believed that children thrive most when they feel safe to be who God created them to be. That belief is at the heart of my newest children’s book, Free to Be Me–Celebrating the Girl God Created Me to Be.
The Heart Behind the Story
I wrote Free to Be Me as a gentle affirmation for girls who are discovering themselves—sometimes confidently, sometimes cautiously. The story grew out of watching children explore their interests with joy and curiosity, whether that meant twirling in dresses, climbing trees, creating art, playing sports, helping others, or dreaming about who they might one day become.
This book isn’t about shaping girls into something new. It’s about honoring who they already are.
What Free to Be Me Encourages in Young Girls
At its heart, this story invites girls to:
- embrace their individuality without comparison
- explore their interests freely and joyfully
- grow in confidence rooted in faith
- recognize their gifts as intentional and meaningful
- treat themselves and others with kindness and courage
Through playful rhyme and cheerful illustrations, the story reinforces that there is no single way to be a girl—and that every child’s interests, talents, and personality have value.
Faith, Identity, and Joy
Faith plays a quiet but steady role throughout Free to Be Me. The story reminds young readers that they are wonderfully made, created with care, and deeply loved by God. Rather than focusing on rules or expectations, the message centers on identity—helping girls understand that their worth is not earned, but given.
When children grow up knowing they are loved just as they are, they are better equipped to walk forward with confidence, compassion, and trust in God’s plan for their lives.
Who This Book Is For

Free to Be Me–Celebrating the Girl God Created Me to Be was written as a small reminder that every girl is precious, purposeful, and beautifully made. I hope it offers encouragement, joy, and reassurance—helping young hearts grow in confidence and grace, just as they are.
